The Church dedicates the entire month of August to devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. And so it has been lovely today to read through so many posts on social media which made reference to this beautiful and motherly Heart, and to see so many lovely images of Her.
Of all the devotions in honour of Our Blessed Lady, there is something immensely attractive to us regarding this particular one. This Immaculate Heart seems to symbolise very explicitly the great love the Mother of God has for each and every one of us, regardless of who we are and in what state our souls might be. For every one of us, She is our Mother – and this image of Her Immaculate Heart appeals to us visually, viscerally and also quite intimately. This Heart loves not only every else – but also ‘me’ as an individual.
Devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary is not new – in fact, it dates back quite a few centuries. You can read a little more about the history of this devotion here, if you wish. Of course, the main impetus for the devotion comes from the appearances of the Blessed Virgin at Fatima in Portugal, in 1917. I have written a number of times about the Fatima appearances and particularly about the request to establish this devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
But beyond all of that, it is very hard for us as human beings, upon whose hearts are written the nature of the children of God with all that gives us, to ignore at some deep and intrinsic level this appeal from the Immaculate Heart of the Mother of God, and to respond in some way to Her.
Throughout this lovely month, may all of us do whatever we can to respond to Her personally and to draw others to Her and to this exquisite devotion.
